Detroit Dance Studio owner Thomas Bowerman says there are three main ways to be creative when it comes to making music at home: Create a playlist Create a schedule for yourself to playlists and listen to your favorite music to get your creative juices flowing.
Bowerman, a Detroit native, opened Detroit Dance Studios with his girlfriend, Jeni, in August of 2016.
Jeni had been working as a music producer and DJ at a local venue for several years and said she loved working at Detroit Dance studios.
She said that working at a Detroit studio allowed her to spend time with her friends and get outside and be creative with her music.
“Detroit is such a big city, and we wanted to create something that we would feel connected to and feel like we could go out and see things that weren’t necessarily in the area,” Jeni said.
“I thought Detroit was really unique in terms of what you could do outside of a club.
It was a cool environment to create music.”
When Jeni and Bowermen started the studio in early 2018, they had a basic concept.
Jenis music was usually mixed and mastered, so they wanted to be able to play the music that she had been producing on her own.
Bowermans goal was to create a playlist that he could listen to on his own time, with friends.
The first playlist he created, called “What’s On?” included a lot of music from Detroit artists including D.R.A.M., The Roots, and the Black Keys.
But he was also working on a song that he wanted to play in a more collaborative format, so he recorded a song with his friends, and it eventually became “Let’s Go” with DJ Dahi.
“I’ve heard from a lot people that when they’re working in a studio, you don’t really get to see what your peers are doing, and I thought this was something that would help me with that,” Bowermon said.
“We’re not trying to get in the middle of any conversation.
This is not a competition.
This isn’t a battle.”
The “Let 10” playlist that Bowermens crew made included songs from DJ Dali, Future, and many other artists, as well as some songs that he had recorded in the studio.
The playlist helped Bowermann get his creative juices going.
“A lot of people say, ‘You know what?
It’s not going to work.
You’re not going.
Your music is so bad,'” Bower said.
“‘Let’s go do something different.'”
“I was very lucky in the beginning.
I had a really good network, and a lot more experience with people than I did in the past.
But in the end, we did really well, and then I got a bunch of offers to work on projects,” Bowers music career has evolved over the past few years, he said.
The “I Want You” and “What I’m Going To Do” playlist he made last year became a hit with fans.
“What” is a popular hip-hop song and the “I want you” was a track from Dali’s album, “Dangerous Liaisons.”
Bowermania has been a huge success.
In addition to being the first Detroit studio to offer free music, Detroit Dance has become a destination for hip-hos to play music together, he added.
“People love to go there.
They love to come here and have fun, and they love to get their creative juices back, which is really fun,” Bowmans said.
