The steps dance studio in the heart of Perth is a hive of activity as more than 50 dancers, choreographers, musicians and producers gather to dance around the clock.
It is one of the most popular dance studios in Australia and is currently hosting a dance night at the weekend.
While it’s not quite as busy as a typical dance night in Sydney, it’s certainly a good place to work.
“We’re still the hub of the dance industry in Australia,” says dance producer and co-founder of Steps Dance Studio, Nick Tarrant.
“There’s no question about it, in terms of the size and the numbers of people we have, it has got to be the best place to be in Perth.”
Tarrants father, Greg Tarrante, was the co-owner of the original Steps Dance studio in 2006.
It had a big following, which has since grown into a thriving music and film industry.
“It’s one of those clubs that has been around for so long, you just don’t realise how much you’re in the middle of it,” he says.
Steps Dance has a long history. “
I don’t know how much more we can take it, so it’s great to see people getting on and making it their own.”
Steps Dance has a long history.
It was founded in 1994 by the same man who founded Steps Dance studios, Dave Hennings, and he started in Perth in the late 80s.
In 2009, it was sold to DJ Tony DeMarco and his band the Step Brothers, who continue to produce the dance studio today.
“In the early days, there was no such thing as a dance studio as there is today,” says DJ Tony, who also goes by DJ Tarranta.
“And so, when we were trying to build a studio, we thought of a dance house, and that’s what we came up with.
It started out as a nightclub.”
After he bought the studio in 2011, Tarrantes son, Nick, joined the group.
“Nick and I started the studio because he was doing it and it was such a great idea,” he said.
“He’s a big promoter and a great promoter.
We have so many great dancers, so we have to work as a team.”
Nick says he’s been working at Steps for four years and it’s become his favourite place to set up.
“As a parent, I have a little bit of a crush on it.
It’s a great club, great people, and I love the energy and the vibe.”
Steps has been a popular destination for Perth’s dance community for years.
In 2016, the club hosted its first ever dance night.
“The step house was the first dance studio I’ve been to in Australia, and we did it in front of more than 100 people, so that was fantastic,” says Nick.
“Dance clubs are not just dance studios.
It means a lot to me.
We’re a family and we have such a love for the music, and to have people coming in to work, and then come back to dance.”
Tarlant says the steps dance community is diverse and growing.
“Everywhere you go, there are people who have worked in the industry for a long time and are very passionate about the industry and who are looking for opportunities to work in it,” says Tarrantly.
“You can see that in the steps community.”
It’s not just the dance community that is expanding in the Perth dance scene.
Steps has also been a destination for music producers.
“A lot of music is produced in Steps and you can see it in the production of music by artists such as Dizzee Rascal, A$AP Rocky and Drake,” says Tony.
And although the studio doesn’t have a live music scene, it does host a variety of events for the dancers. “
So the whole business is a family affair.”

The club hosts special events like special occasions for dancers and special events for their music producers, like the Dance Night, the Dance Awards and the Dance Festival.
“If there’s something you need, there is a way to get it,” explains Tarrance.
“That’s the biggest thing.
If there’s a music producer, they can come in, and they can meet up with a DJ, a band, they’ve got to meet the dancers.”
TARRANT says the studio has been so successful in the past couple of years because of its staff and the community they support.
“Because of the community, the people, it can be a really supportive environment for the studio,” he explains.
“But also, there have been a few times where it’s been really hard for
